From 'AFK' ~ a Mid Week Tease ( @evernightpub #erom #urbanfantasy )

Welcome to the middle of the week!
. . .Mid Week Tease is an event where authors are spotlighting a few lines or a paragraph or two from their stories. Readers, you get to sample some delicious snippets and be teased, titillated and tantalized into the weekend!

. . .My contribution to MWT this week is from Evernight's anthology Keyboards & Kink & my story in it called AFK. Like I mentioned last week, I'm currently working on the first book in the series (Open World - a C.O.V.E.N. story) that follows what happened in AFK. This segment picks up a little after where last week's left off. Enjoy!

. . . . . .* Unfortunately, all the clues Bella had found over the course of time led her to Godric, the wonderful man she’d met and who haunted her daydreams. She hoped he wasn’t the one she searched for. Godric had been too kind, too funny and warm to be the evil one she tracked. She wasn’t much for praying, but she called upon any higher deity out there listening to let her assumption that he was the warlock be wrong.
. . . . . .* Too many close calls and lonely nights depleted her hope for a bright future more than she cared to admit. Bella loved her job as a warrior in the clan, but she was tired of failing and coming up emptyhanded on this particular mission. She couldn’t wait till she could give chase of the evil ones and Chem Warfare Urchins, also known as CWU’s, for mere sport and play rather than under command of her leader and his vengeful need. Maybe once she brought the amulet back, they’d stop calling her Bella Morte—Beautiful Death. However, until she completed her responsibilities to her and her master’s satisfaction, she had to soldier on and continue to hunt within the wartorn ruins of Las Vegas for those who had to be dispatched.
. . . . . .* A true shame Godric’s next on my list. Killing him would be a horrible waste of a beautiful male specimen. Perhaps I should stop thinking of him in terms of a hunky man with a name. Might make doing the necessary deed easier in the long run.

. . .Find out more about AFK here: Website -- AFK

. . .Come back next week for another look into AFK!

. . .Visit these other wonderful authors for more MWT goodness!

It’s a ZOMBIE EROTOCLYPSE! ( @TamsinFlowers #zombie #kindle )

Hi
......For those of you who haven't come across me before, my name is Tamsin Flowers and I've been writing erotica for a couple of years - and hopefully you'll be hearing more of me in the future!
......Anyway, I'm thrilled to be here on Casey's blog as part of my Zombie Erotoclypse tour.
......Zombie what?
......Zombie Erotoclypse is my new collection of short stories - all zombie erotica, great fun and a little bit steamy. I'm using my tour to introduce the stories and the characters and today I'll be focusing on the final story in the book, Bar the Door.
......Bar the Door is probably the most serious - and the most romantic - of all the five stories and I have to admit it's a bit of tear-jerker. Can you imagine how you'd feel if your other half came home and showed you that he'd been bitten by a zombie? This is what happens to Emma and Galen and they know they have just a few short hours left before the unspeakable happens…

Here's an excerpt:
......No matter how many times you dream of the worst possible disaster befalling you, when it actually happens it's ten thousand times more terrible than anything you could imagine. Think about that for a moment and then try to imagine the split second that's so terrifying it goes beyond anything you could have dreamt.
......That's what it was like. That day. That moment.
......Galen knocked on the door in the secret pattern, I drew back the bolts and first thing I saw was blood. On his shoulder, all the way down his arm, soaking the sleeve of his shirt with a dark, sticky stain. I smelt it too, sweet and metallic, somehow animal.
......Terror swept through me and I dropped to my knees. It was the moment I'd been dreading so long and it hit me like a punch in the gut. I couldn't breathe and my head started spinning.
......I should have slammed the door in his face. I know that now. But I knew it then and I didn't do it. We'd been living like this for so many months I'd lost count. And every day, before either one of us went out to scavenge food, we repeated the mantra: if a zombie attacks, don't come back/bar the door to the biters and the bitten. Galen was wrong to come home to me once he'd been mauled and I was wrong to let him in. But I'm glad I did. Whatever the future holds as a result of our actions that day, I'm glad Galen just didn't vanish without a trace into the zombie hoards. Because that's what would have happened if he hadn't come back to me.
......Galen pushed past me into the apartment.
......"Get the fucking door shut," he said, his voice a dry rasp.
......He staggered to the couch while I fought with reality. It took the sound of a zombie blood howl on the porch to bring me round. I leapt to my feet and slammed the door, throwing the bolts with practiced speed. Then I peered out through the metal grid covering the only small window left at the front of the house. There were three of them, mature and fetid zombies, lumbering across our porch and I immediately heard one of them scraping against the door. I reached for the rifle.
......"Leave them," said Galen. "They'll go away when they realize they can't get in. Don't waste bullets on them. You can't afford to throw any away now."
......'Now.' I knew what he was referring to—and 'you'. An icy cold hand clasped around my heart. I went over to where he lay sprawled on the couch. There was a lump in my throat when I tried to speak.
......"What…?"
......"…happened? I got careless, Emma. I fucking got complacent."
......And then my big, strong, adorable Galen started to cry. It was something I'd never seen him do and it cut me up. Even more than seeing the blood on his shoulder that was his death knell.

......Thank goodness zombies are only fictional (I think…) And if you want more it's only 99c or 77p for all five stories!

......To find out whom else the zombies will be visiting over the next month check out the schedule on Tamsin's Superotica.

Author bio: Tamsin Flowers
......Tamsin Flowers loves to write light-hearted erotica, often with a twist in the tail/tale and a sense of fun. In the words of one reviewer, 'Ms Flowers has a way of describing sexual tension that forces itself upon your own body.' Her stories have appeared in a wide variety of anthologies and she is now graduating to novellas with the intention to pen her magnum opus in the very near future. In the meantime, like most erotica writers, she finds herself working on at least ten stories at once: while she figures out whose leg belongs in which story, you can find out more about her at Tamsin's Superotica or Tamsin Flowers. A Look At Gregory Delaurentis & 'Cover of Darkness' ( @cupgrease @GoddessFish #mystery )

Today we have author Gregory Delaurentis visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Gregory Delaurentis spent his adult life roaming from job to job, working for Lockheed in California, various law firms in New York, and financial firms on Wall Street. Throughout this period of time, he was writing—unceasingly—finally producing a large body of work, albeit unrecognized and unpublished . . . until now.

What are you going to tell us about today?
* My story Cover of Darkness. Cover of Darkness is the first in a series of upcoming books that include Edge of Darkness, Pale of Darkness and Cries of Darkness. These novels follow the lives of three individuals who do battle bringing criminals to justice, while they struggle to understand the complex relationships that exist among themselves. This intriguing trio has absorbed the attention of Mr. Delaurentis for the past year and a half, so much so he decided to self-publish their stories to bring them to a wider audience. [AUTHOR’S DISCLAIMER: These are works of fiction. Name, characters, places, and incidents either are the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events, or locales is entirely coincidental.]

A look into the story
~ Blurb ~
* A high profile murder of a Wall Street executive in Westchester pits three people against the criminal underbelly of Manhattan nightlife. The key players are two ex-cops turned private investigators—Kevin Whitehouse, whose sharpest tool is his keen analytical mind, and David Allerton, a former Special Forces operative—and Margaret Alexander, Kevin’s lover. In their search for a killer, they are forced to travel to the edge of sanity and morality, while stumbling onto their own confusing secrets as well. The Cover of Darkness is a gritty noir saga that untangles a web of deceit in the course of tracking down a brutal murderer.
~ Excerpt ~
* David stopped pacing, and then started working on a rock embedded in the dirt with the toe of his shoe. “I wonder why MacDonald didn’t say anything in the interview about the cops being present. He should have told us that there were cops in the Midnight for protection—making sure the dealers were selling and not using.”
* “Maybe,” Kevin ventured, “he didn’t want to drop a dime on his cop friends. Maybe he was frightened.”
* “Maybe. That would have helped us a lot,” David said, his eye caught by a shapely girl on a bike riding nearby.
* Margaret sat up. “That would also explain how the killer got past the gate and simply walked into the house. He could have been flashing a badge.”
* “That makes some sense,” Kevin said. “And certainly cops can kill.”
* “They make the best assassins, don’t they?” David quipped.
* “So now this is a cop hunt?” Kevin asked.
* “I would rather it end here, guys,” Margaret said.
* David approached the two and stood over them. “The question is now how to hunt the most dangerous thing in New York. Crossing the thin blue line is not going to be fun or easy.”
* “Fun?” Margaret said. “It’s downright dangerous.”
* “We can’t go to Ferryman and Reynolds,” Kevin said, nervously running his fingers through his hair, and retrieving his arm from around Margaret as he sat up. “They’ll only go on the defensive. And if the case starts turning in that direction, they’ll only deflect it.”

* A slight breeze carried a hint of copper. Blood? Perhaps. She just hoped it wasn’t his. She’d been tracking the man from the Winchapel clan for too long to let her quarry fall prey to someone else’s hands. Besides, if she had a chance to be alone with Godric Winchapel again--even if only for a few minutes--she’d take the opportunity to derive some personal pleasure from his presence. It’d be wonderful to have his strong arms wrap around her, his hot mouth on her skin, her lips, her breasts. She wanted his fingers threading through her long ebony hair, gripping the lengths in his fist as he took her.
* Bella shook her head to clear the licentious thoughts. Gah! No matter how nice it’d be to escape the ravaged city through his touch, I have to stop daydreaming about him.

* Deepening shadows of dusk descended on the area. Standing in the dark recess of a doorway, Bella, dressed in black leather pants, tank-top and jacket, blended into the scenery. She sniffed the air. The scents of cooking meats and their fatty, greasy drippings from the fast food hamburger place down the block and the hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint next door stimulated her appetite. People had told her the burritos and enchiladas didn’t appear appetizing, but the food was said to be superb, the best on the boulevard. Her stomach gurgled. No time to eat.
* Other smells wafted by her. Hot, dusty asphalt, releasing its heat gathered from the relentless blazing sun of day, underlay the food. The odor of thousands upon thousands of tourists that had walked the streets followed on its heels, and trailing after everything...his scent. She lifted her face toward the blanket of night sliding over and covering the waning light of the gray day and inhaled deeply.
* She enjoyed a brief moment of pleasure from Godric’s scent. Leather and wool. Male musk denoting strength and virility. If only he weren’t an enemy of my clan.

A Look At Joseph Spencer & 'Wrage' ( @josephspencer00 @DamnationBooks @GoddessFish #thriller #occult )

Today we have author Joseph Spencer visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* I graduated summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a Mass Communications degree. I worked for ten years as a print journalist for regional daily newspapers before switching careers to work in public safety at a 9-1-1 emergency call center. I find my new job challenging, but I missed writing and storytelling. I’ve only been writing fiction the past three years.

What book are you going to tell us about today? Is it part of a series? If so, what's the order the books should be read in?
* Wrage is the second book of my Sons of Darkness Series of occult thrillers centering on police investigations into brutal killings in the organized crime-corrupted Midwestern city of Prairieville. Grim, my professional debut, is the first book in the series. You can read the books out of order, but Wrage picks up where Grim left off and readers would understand all of what’s happening better if they read them in order.

How'd you/your muse come up with this story?
* I had a few different inspirations. I became fascinated with Heath Ledger’s Joker character in Dark Knight and also Dexter Morgan in Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter series. I wanted to create antihero characters which created chaos in their environments like the Joker and Dexter. I’m also a huge fan of the TV show Supernatural, so I strived to mix an occult thriller with the traditional crime novel to come up with a unique story.

Describe the main character in five words.
* Jeff Wrage is 1) lost 2) desperate 3)conflicted 4)powerful 5) redeemed

Describe another character in five words.
* Anna Duke is 1)heartbroken 2)alone 3)motivated 4)mysterious 5) resilient

Describe a third character in five words.
* Christopher Sinks is 1) depressed 2)desperate 3) sadistic 4) trapped 5) deadly

Who's your favorite character in the book & why?
* My favorite character is Abaddon. He is a demon who strikes a deal with Jeff Wrage to help him avenge his murdered wife. Abaddon seeks justice for souls of violent crimes who are unable to move on in the afterlife because their affairs were left unsettled in life. Abaddon’s bargain is that Jeff must kill murderers to receive help in hunting down his wife’s killer.

What's your favorite line in the story?
* “That’s the irony. The greatest detective in the world was totally clueless.” – Detective Ryan Winkle on hero cop Adam White being unaware that his protégé Anna Duke had a crush on him.

A look into the story

~ Blurb ~
* Sometimes the toughest fight lies within yourself.
* As more dark secrets come to light, the battle for souls pushes Prairieville to the brink of war in the living and supernatural realms.
* Jeff Wrage swears a blood oath to Abaddon, the supernatural avenger of murder victims, to hunt the crooked cop who butchered his wife. Jeff wonders whether he can be the executioner Abaddon requires. Their pact throws the supernatural realm in chaos and threatens to trigger an apocalyptic fight for control of the afterlife between the Sons of Darkness and Sons of Light foretold in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
* Orlando Marino sees the death of Cyrus Black as his opportunity to restore the Marino family's stronghold in Prairieville’s organized crime scene and become a mob kingpin. He unleashes a plague, turning its victims into mindless followers. Cyrus' heir is busy rooting out a traitor and is unable to stop the coming turf war in the realm of man.
* The fate of all rests with Homicide Detective Anna Duke, who steps into the shoes of her mentor while coming to terms with unrequited love. As she tries to clear the fallen hero's name, she takes on a case where corpses go missing. Her new partner is reported dead. She learns the truth about her true identity and uncovers a trail of secrets questioning her tragic past. She journeys to avert the destruction of all creation.

~ Excerpt ~
* Thunderclaps from high above jolted Jeff out of his slumber.
* Something hard and cold with jagged edges pressed into his back.
* When he tried to move, iron shackles strained against the skin of his arms and legs. Chained to a rock in a dry stream bed, he knew he’d become a helpless prisoner who could do nothing more than wait for his captor. Stormy skies threatened from directly above him with bright flares of lightning snaking among sooty clouds and disappearing. Out of the corner of his eye, he could detect that the sun was shining brightly on the other side of the rock.
* Scant rays of brilliant sunshine peeked over the rock, reflecting bright light off a magnificent golden shrine on a bank not far from where he was chained.
* This can’t be real. He’d never seen a place like this in his life.
* Large wet drops crashed against his skin. The coolness of the rain streaking down his body caused steam to rise from his skin, which he noticed had turned a dark shade of crimson. The only being this red was….
* “Lucifer,” a calm voice echoed from above Jeff on the shoreline.
* A giant, dressed in white armor sparkling like diamonds in the spare sunlight, stepped into view. He wielded a golden-hilted silver sword in one hand and a silver shield with the Latin inscription “Quis ut Deus” (I am like God) on the front in the other hand. He loomed above Jeff. A large gold cross ran down the center of the giant’s breastplate. A second inlaid golden cross glinted at the center of his white helmet. The helmet obscured his face, save for flawless ivory skin which radiated a blinding light. There was something across his back casting a large shadow, but Jeff couldn’t see what it was.
* “You were thinking of Lucifer, whose skin is often portrayed as red,” the giant said. The ivory giant stepped into full view. From his back a pair of massive wings spanned over ten feet wide and five feet long majestically fluttering in the breeze, yet didn’t cast a shadow. The rain pelting Jeff in the eyes didn’t touch this giant. He certainly was no man. The only thing Jeff could compare it to would be—
* “An angel,” the giant completed Jeff’s sentence again. “You are correct.”
